These volunteers tip the left ear to identify each cat as having been sterilized, express the bladders of non-pregnant females and cryptorchid males, gently secure the female and cryptorchid male patients to the spay boards, and record the antibiotic dosage and confirmation of the ear-tip procedure. After signing in, volunteers confirm the inventory in the Pre-Prep Supply Kit and set up the station.
Infectious Cat Warning
If an infectious cat (URI, ringworm or other infectious condition) is inadvertently handled during the flow of healthy cats through the clinic, all station staff must change their gloves, and the table drapes must be replaced before handling or treating healthy cats.

The Pre-Prep Recorder enters the antibiotic dosage and confirmation of the ear-tip procedure on the Medical Record.
Ear-Tip Technicians work together to prepare the cat for surgery by administering antibiotics and tipping the cat’s left ear. The ear-tip technician monitors the cat’s respiration, pulse and color, checks the Veterinary Examination Form to determine the gender of the cat. A pregnant cat would bypass the Bladder Express Station. Lactating females proceed to the Bladder Express Station along with other non-pregnant female cats. Typically one of the ear-tip technicians also acts as the Pre-Prep Station captain.
The Express Technician monitors the cat’s respiration, pulse and color, checks the Veterinary Examination Form record to be sure the cat is a non-pregnant female or a cryptorchid male and expresses the bladders of those cats. Pregnant female cats and male cats that are not cryptorchid do not have their bladders expressed.
The Spay Boards Technician monitors the cat’s respiration, pulse and color, and secures female cats as well as cryptorchid males to spay boards. Then delivers the secured cat to the Surgery Prep Station and cleans the spay boards when returned from the Vaccinations Station.
